Privacy Policy
Last updated October 13, 2026
This policy explains what Sugarcane LLC (“Sugarcane,” “we,” “us”) collects when you use the Sugarcane app, joinsugarcane.com and our related services (together, the “Service”), how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. Sugarcane is only for adults 18 and older in the United States.
1. Information we collect
Information you give us
- Account details: your name, email address, login details and birthday. We use your birthday only to confirm you’re 18 or older; it never appears on your profile. If you choose to give us a phone number, we collect that too.
- Profile selfie: a live photo taken with your phone’s front camera. It becomes your profile photo.
- What you post and send: clips, photos (including team photos), captions, comments, thumbs up, reposts, follows and messages to other players.
- Team details, if you start or join a team.
- Reports and support requests, and anything else you send us.
- Waitlist: if you join the waitlist on our website, your email address.
Information from games
- Check-ins: the venue, the game, the time and the pinnie number you’re given.
- Game footage: Sugarcane games are filmed. Footage shows the players and can pick up sound, including what people say. We cut it into clips of skills, goals, passes, defensive plays and saves.
- Game activity: the games you sign up for, your points, ranks and placement, matchups (Compete), picks, results, head-to-head records, and any cards or suspensions.
Information from payments
When you pay for a game, our payment processor, Stripe, handles your card or Apple Pay details. We receive a record of the payment (amount, date, status, card type and last four digits), never your full card number.
Information collected automatically
- From the app: device type, operating system and app version, a notification token so we can send you notifications, crash reports, and basic logs of how the app is used (for example, errors and which screens load). We use these to keep the Service working and secure.
- From the website: our web host keeps standard server logs, such as IP address, browser type and the pages requested. The website doesn’t use advertising or analytics cookies.
What we don’t collect
- Your phone’s GPS or precise location. Your location in Sugarcane comes only from the venues where you check in.
- Biometric data. We don’t scan, map or measure faces or voices, and we don’t use face recognition on your selfie or on game footage. We match players to footage by pinnie number, team color and the game’s roster, and our team compares profile photos by eye when needed.
- Your contacts or address book.
2. How we use it
- To run the Service: create your account, check your age, sign you up for games, check you in, assign pinnies, take payments and give refunds.
- To make clips and rankings: tag clips to the right player, count points, build leaderboards and head-to-head records, and show your profile and clips to other players.
- To keep games fair and safe: review reports, look into unusual scores, prevent cheating and collusion, give cards and suspensions, and stop abuse.
- To contact you: game reminders, new-clip alerts, account and service messages, and replies to support requests. If you joined the waitlist, we’ll email you about Sugarcane’s launch.
- To promote Sugarcane: we may feature clips from Sugarcane games, with the players’ names, in Sugarcane’s own posts on social media and in our ads, as described in our Terms.
- To fix and improve the Service.
- To follow the law, enforce our Terms, and protect the rights and safety of players, venues and Sugarcane.
3. What other players can see
- Shown to other Sugarcane users: your name, profile photo, home venue (“Plays most at”), team, clips, points, ranks, head-to-head record, posts, comments, thumbs up and reposts, and the games you’ve signed up for.
- Clips can travel: players can share clips outside the app, and anyone with the link can watch them. Once a clip is posted on another platform, that platform’s rules apply to it.
- Kept private: your birthday, email, phone number, payment details and the list of players you follow. Messages are between you and the person you’re messaging; we look at them only if one is reported or we need to for safety or legal reasons. If you report someone, we don’t tell them it was you. For picks, players see only how many people chose each side, never who picked whom.
4. Who we share it with
- Venues: when you sign up for a game, that venue gets what it needs to run the session: your name, that you’ve paid, and your check-in and pinnie number. Venues don’t get your selfie, birthday or payment card details.
- Service providers: companies that run parts of the Service for us, such as Supabase (accounts, database and video storage), Stripe (payments) and Apple (Apple Pay and notifications), plus our web host, our email provider, and contractors who help build and secure the app. They may use your information only to provide services to us, and they must protect it.
- For legal and safety reasons: when the law requires it, or to protect someone’s safety, look into fraud or abuse, or enforce our Terms.
- If Sugarcane is sold or merges: your information may move to the new owner, and this policy will still apply to it.
- When you ask us to, for example when you share a clip.
We don’t sell personal information. We don’t share it for targeted advertising, and we don’t track you across other companies’ apps or websites. Sponsored posts in the feed aren’t targeted using information from other companies.
5. Your selfie and game footage
Illinois has a strict biometric privacy law (the Biometric Information Privacy Act, or BIPA), so here is exactly how photos and footage work.
- Why we ask for a selfie: game footage shows numbered pinnies, not names. Your selfie lets our team confirm who wore which pinnie, so clips and points go to the right person.
- Who looks at it: our team, and contractors who help review clips, by eye. Other players see it as your profile photo. Venues don’t get it.
- No face scanning: we don’t use face recognition, or any software that maps or measures facial features, on your selfie or on game footage. We don’t create or keep biometric identifiers or biometric information as Illinois law defines them. If that ever changes, we’ll tell you in writing first, ask for your written consent, and publish a schedule for keeping and destroying that data before we collect any.
- It’s your choice: you can skip the selfie. You can still sign up for games and play, but you won’t earn ranking points until you add one. You can retake it anytime with your front camera, and the old one is deleted.
- Footage: playing in a Sugarcane game means you’ll be filmed. You agree to this when you check in, and venues post signs. If a clip of you shouldn’t be up, report it in the app or email us and we’ll review it.
6. Your choices
- Profile: edit your profile and retake your selfie in the app.
- Notifications: switch each type on or off in the app’s Settings, or turn them all off in your iPhone’s settings.
- Email: every marketing email has an unsubscribe link.
- Blocking: block players you don’t want to hear from.
- Your data: to see, correct, download or delete your information, email support@joinsugarcane.com from the email on your account. We’ll reply within 45 days. These choices are open to everyone, whatever state you live in, and using them won’t change how we treat you.
- Do Not Track: our website doesn’t track you across other sites, so it works the same whether or not your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signals.
7. Deleting your account
Delete your account in the app under Profile → Settings → Delete account, or email us from the email on your account. Within 30 days we delete your account and the information connected to it, including your profile, selfie, follows, posts and comments. We remove clips where you’re the featured player, and take your name off clips where you appear in the background.
We keep a few things only where we have to:
- payment and refund records, for taxes and accounting, for as long as the law requires;
- a minimal record of serious rule-breaking, such as a ban, so a banned player can’t simply open a new account;
- information we need for a legal claim or investigation;
- backup copies, which are overwritten on a rolling schedule.
8. How long we keep information
- Account information: while your account is open, then as described in section 7.
- Raw game footage: only as long as we need it to make clips, check reports and settle disputes. Then we delete it.
- Clips: until the clip is removed, or until you delete your account if you’re the featured player.
- Waitlist emails: until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete yours.
9. Security
We protect your information with encryption in transit (HTTPS), access controls and limited staff access. No system is perfectly secure, so we can’t promise absolute security. If a breach affects your information, we’ll tell you as the law requires.
10. Age limit
Sugarcane is only for adults 18 and older. We don’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 18, and if we learn we have, we delete it. If you think someone under 18 is using Sugarcane, email us.
11. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we’ll post the new version here and update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we’ll also tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
